disgyblionCongratulations to Gwydion Rhys on winning the first prize in the String Solo competition for years 7-9 at the Urdd National Eisteddfod. Gwydion was also 3rd in the main composing competition – the Medal for Music Composition - a remarkable feat for a 14 year old pupil!

The school is very proud of their achievements.

Congratulations to Adam Hughes who has won a Gwynedd Law Society Scholarship due to his excellent A Level results. Adam has just started studying Law at Cardiff University.

24.06.14 Personal Profile Presentation Ceremony

The annual Personal Profile Presentation Ceremony was held in the school on Wednesday afternoon, June 18th. Photos from the ceremony can be seen in the Photo Album section under the heading ‘Pupils.’ The guest speaker was the school’s Career Adviser, Mr Iwan Hywel. A Level and AS results are published on Thursday, August 14th, and GCSE results on Thursday, August, 21st. On both days the results can be collected from the school from 9 am onwards.

24.03.14 Industrial Action on Wednesday
Due to industrial action, the school will be closed on Wednesday, March 26th, to pupils in year 7 to 11. The school will be open as usual to students in the Sixth Form, and the school buses will run normally.


16.01.14 Excellent attendance!

As part of the school’s campaign to promote good attendance, we decided to award prizes to one pupil from every year whose attendance was 100% for the last fortnight of the Christmas term – a time of year when pupils’ attendance usually declines. As a result, pupils’ overall attendance for this period was substantially improved.

Congratulations to Esme Crowe from year 7 for winning the second prize at the Urdd National Eisteddfod in the prose competition for year 7 pupils. Esme's story was called 'Yr Encil' (The Retreat') and this is a link to the story.


24:05:13 Personal Profiles Ceremony
The annual Personal Profiles ceremony was held today to pupils from years 11 and 13. This is traditionally their last official day in School, and pupils are allowed to wear smart clothes for the occasion. PC Dewi Thomas – the school’s education liaison officer – was the guest speaker. Pictures of the ceremony can be seen on this website under ‘Pupils’ and ‘Photo Album’.


13:05:13 University Scholarships
Congratulations to three sixth formers who have won university scholarships. Catrin Roberts has won a scholarship to Bangor University and both Mari Gwyn and Sian Mererid Jones have gained prizes to study at Aberystwyth University. We wish all three the very best for the future.

Congratulations to Esme Crowe from year 7 for winning the second prize in the Prose competition for year 7 at the Urdd National Eisteddfod which will be held in Pembrokeshire at the end of May.


22:03:13 Visit by Mr Leighton Andrews, Minister for Education

The Education Minister, Mr Leighton Andrews, has visited the school following publication of a report on the school by Estyn. The minister was very interested in the use the school made of Moodle to present lessons, and he visited a year 9 Welsh lesson. In their report on the school, Estyn state that the school’s use of contemporary technology in lessons was sector leading. The minister was interviewed for the school radio by two year 8 pupils, Elliott Tugwell and Owain Morgan, and lunch was prepared by a year 10 Hospitality class. Also present was the local assembly member, Alun Ffred Jones, and Councillor Sian Gwenllian, the education portfolio holder on Gwynedd Council.

Year 8 pupils produced a report as part ot the BBC’s School Report day. The topics covered in the report were the new zip wire in Bethesda, parking problems in Gerlan, the choir’s visit to Eurosdisney, activities in the youth club, and developments in Neuadd Ogwen.

March 2013 - Singing at Euro Disney

The school’s choir was invited to sing in Eurodisney as part of St David’s Day celebrations. A number of schools from Wales were present at the celebrations but Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen was the only choir invited to take part.

Inspection
The school is being inspected by Estyn at the end of November, and parents can participate towards the inspection in two ways. First of all by completing the parents’ quesionnaire – either a paper copy which has been delivered to every home and must be returned to the school by Wednesday 7/11.12, or on-line http://vir.estyn.gov.uk and select Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen from the list of schools and complete it by Friday 9/11/12. Secondly, there will be a meeting for parents with the inspectors on Monday, November 26th, at 5.00 pm, in the school hall. Please support the school by completing the questionnaire and attending the meeting.


INSET Days - school closed
Due to staff training, the school will be closed to pupils on the following two days – Friday, October 26th and Friday, November 9th.

The Prize Giving Ceremony
The Prize Giving Ceremony takes place on Wednesday, September 19th, at 7.00. The guest speaker will be John Hardy, an ex-pupil who is a familiar face and voice on S4C and on the radio. A warm welcome to everyone.

Congratulations
Congratulations to all our pupils who received their examination results this summer. Year 11 results were the best the school have ever received, with 95% gaining 5A*-C or the equivalent. Every pupil in year 13 have been accepted on courses for which they had applied, and a special mention must be made of Gethin Sherrington and Henri Williams for spectacular A level results! Gethin gained 3A’s and 1A* and is going to study Physics at Manchester University, whilst Henri gained 2A*’s and 2A’s and will be going to Jesus College Oxford to study Mathematics. We wish all our former pupils the very best for the future.


Mali Parry-Owen from Rhiwlas
One of our former pupils, Mali Parry-Owen from Rhiwlas, is taking a gap year before going to university doing community work in Honduras in Central America. Quite a challenge!!
